چکیده

Two lineages of fishes convergently evolved electric organs; recent research has shown that they independently took advantage of an extra copy of a sodium channel gene to alter channel kinetics for the electric organ discharge.

Coding of stimuli by ampullary afferents in Gnathonemus petersii.

Weakly electric fish use electroreception for both active and passive electrolocation and for electrocommunication. While both active and passive electrolocation systems are prominent in weakly electric Mormyriform fishes, knowledge of their passive electrolocation ability is still scarce. To better estimate the contribution of passive electric sensing to the orientation toward electric stimuli...

Static frequency tuning accounts for changes in neural synchrony evoked by transient communication signals.

Although communication signals often vary continuously on the underlying signal parameter, they are perceived as distinct categories. We here report the opposite case where an electrocommunication signal is encoded in four distinct regimes, although the behavior described to date does not show distinct categories. In particular, we studied the encoding of chirps by P-unit afferents in the weakl...

Precision measurement of electric organ discharge timing from freely moving weakly electric fish.

Physiological measurements from an unrestrained, untethered, and freely moving animal permit analyses of neural states correlated to naturalistic behaviors of interest. Precise and reliable remote measurements remain technically challenging due to animal movement, which perturbs the relative geometries between the animal and sensors. Pulse-type electric fish generate a train of discrete and ste...

Stimulus-induced up states in the dorsal pallium of a weakly electric fish.

We investigated the response of putative novelty-detecting neurons in the pallium of an electric fish to electrosensory and acoustic stimuli. Extracellular and whole cell patch recordings were made from neurons in the dorsal pallial nucleus (DD) of Apteronotus leptorhynchus. DD neurons were typically quiescent and exhibited hyperpolarized resting membrane potentials. Stimulation induced, with a...

Effect of Different Live Foods Source (Culex Larvae, Chironomus Larvae and Artemia) on Pigmentation of Electric Yellow (Labidochromis Caeruleus)

The orange-red spectrum of  the skin of  electric yellow (Labidochromis caeruleus) is  one  of  the  idealistic and  necessary  schemas sought  by  aquarists  and commercial producers. In this study, the effect of live foods meal on the skin coloration of juvenile electric yellow was examined. 270 fish with an average living body weight was 0.42 ± 0.11 g, and average total length was 3...
